SALHUB

Building Space Sector Capability with Applied Training in EO/GIS, PNT, and SatComms

The Space Applications Learning Hub (SALHUB) is a UK Space Agency-funded initiative launched under the 2024 Training Programmes Fund to address key skills shortages identified in the 2023 Space Sector Skills Survey. Delivered by a consortium of expert partners - Geospatial Ventures Limited (GVL), the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN), and Space Professionals Partnership Limited (SPPL) - with evaluation support from the Space Skills Alliance, SALHUB provided high-quality, applied training in systems engineering, data/AI/ML, and commercial operations. The programme focused on three strategically important satellite application domains: Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT), Earth Observation and GIS (EO/GIS), and Satellite Communications (SatComms). Through a combination of foundational, cross-cutting content and domain-specific modules, SALHUB equipped participants with practical, industry-relevant skills that directly support the UK’s goal of building a skilled, future-ready space workforce.

Training was delivered through a blended model, combining the accessibility of online learning with the depth of immersive in-person courses. Online sessions took place between September and December 2024, with weekly live webinars across four thematic areas. All content was recorded and made available via a private YouTube playlist until March 2025, offering flexible access for participants. In-person training followed in early 2025, with intensive, five-day courses delivered in London and Nottingham. The training was open, free of charge, and in high demand - underscoring the strong interest in upskilling within and beyond the space sector. SALHUB aimed to engage over 300 participants in person and 2,000 online, generating more than 27,000 hours of active engagement.

The impact of SALHUB has been significant and far-reaching. Evaluation findings revealed that 82% of participants intended to apply their new knowledge directly in their roles, and 54% felt confident pursuing new opportunities requiring these skills. On average, participants experienced a 48% increase in subject understanding. Many credited the programme with improving their ability to collaborate across disciplines, contribute more effectively to technical projects, and engage in strategic decision-making. Several attendees reported gaining new employment, enhancing academic research, or expanding their professional networks as a result of the training. SALHUB has not only closed critical skills gaps but also empowered participants to advance their careers, contribute to innovation, and play a more active role in shaping the future of the UK space sector.
