FOREST
Fix One Reliable Electronic Supervision of Trees
FOREST is an innovative project that explores how precision technology can create reliable, traceable records of tree-planting activity. The project responded to the forestry sector’s need for verified evidence of what was planted, where it was planted and when, replacing manual records and retrospective estimates with accurate, audit-ready data.
Through the integration of high-accuracy GNSS technology and planter exit-chute microswitches, each sapling was automatically detected and recorded with centimetre-level coordinates and a timestamp. The system was tested during live planting operations in Scotland, allowing data to be collected in real time without disrupting established forestry workflows.
The finished project successfully recorded 40,000 trees in three days, producing a verified digital record of every planting event. FOREST demonstrates the value of combining practical engineering with geospatial technology to improve transparency, strengthen long-term reporting and build greater confidence in forestry and natural-capital projects.
